Subscription

What is a Subscription?

A subscription is a payment model in which users pay a recurring fee to access an application, service, content, or specific features for a defined period, such as monthly or annually. In mobile apps, subscriptions can provide access to premium functionality, digital content, memberships, services, or other recurring benefits. Depending on what is being sold and the platform requirements, subscriptions may be processed through app store billing systems or other supported payment providers.

Why it matters

Subscriptions can provide businesses with recurring revenue instead of relying only on one-time purchases. They are commonly used for apps that continuously provide services, premium features, memberships, educational content, or regularly updated digital content. For users, a subscription provides ongoing access while it remains active.

Example

A business creates a mobile app with free basic functionality and offers additional premium features through a monthly subscription. Users can access the standard features without paying and activate the subscription when they want to use the premium functionality.
